The Basics of Watercolor in Painter 12

Description

Basic principles of developing an image with the look and feel of watercolor in a digital world is explored.  Traditional watercolor has specific tools and techniques to create a watercolor.  Digital medium has similar tools, but they are used in a different way.  In this class we will explore those differences and learn to capitalize on them.  We will discover papers, brushes, and other tools, tips and tricks to make a wet image.  We will practice painting techniques, like washes, wet into wet, and dry brush. The lessons will be in video format that can be downloaded to your computer.  There will be no PDFs.  A painting will be created each week.

Software Requirements

  • Painter 12
  • A basic understanding of your Operating System

Hardware Requirements

  • A machine that is configured to run Painter 12.  A better than basic system is strongly recommended.
  • A Wacom tablet or its equivalent.  Pressure sensitivity is recommended.

Before Class

There are no before class requirements at this time.

Week One

Tools, Tips, and Tricks

We will look at the basic tools used in digital watercolor painting: brushes, color sets, brushes, selections, etc.  We will begin looking at brush tweaking and this topic will be developed each week.

Week Two

Washes, Splatters, Dry Brush, and other Painting Techniques.

This week we will develop good painting techniques and spend most of the week practicing making washes, wet and damp strokes, and lifting color from the image..  We will continue learning about brush tweaking.

Week Three

Negative Painting, Channels and Layer Masks

We will explore negative painting, channels and layer masks.  We will continue learning about brush tweaking.

Week Four

Mixed media Watercolor

We will explore using other media with watercolor, and in some cases, we will turn the media into wet media. We will touch on using Liquid ink and Real Wet Oils in combination with Real Watercolor.
